This splits up the strenuous mountain phases and gives you a much-needed overnight stay in the magical, mist-shrouded Chinese tea village of Ban Rak Thai.
This means you don’t have to choose between hitting the Pai nightlife and taking your time through the remote Shan villages—you have the time to do firmly both.
Day 1: Chiang Mai to Pai

Focus purely on the intense mountain curves and arriving safely into the Pai valley without rushing.
- KM 45 - 32 Coffee Hill: Relax and stretch your legs before the real 762-curve climb begins.
- KM 135 - Pai: Spend the entire afternoon café hopping (Khaotha Coffee or Monko) before joining the heavy evening crowds at the Walking Street market.

Day 2: Pai to Ban Rak Thai

Dive deep into the high mountains, passing through the remote Soppong ridges. You aren’t going to Mae Hong Son City today; you are heading directly up to the Myanmar border.
- KM 45 - Jabo Village: Unbeatable cliff-edge views and phenomenal local coffee.
- KM 120 - Ban Rak Thai: The final 15 km are incredibly steep—use proper engine braking on descents! Spend the whole afternoon drinking tea and walking around the beautiful lakeside village. It truly feels like stepping into a historical Chinese painting.
Stay Strategy: Ban Rak Thai — Lee Wine Ruk Thai Resort (stay in the iconic tea-hill cabins) or Chasa Rakthai. Ban Rak Thai is entirely sleepy; there is no nightlife here. Embrace the absolute silence.
Day 3: Ban Rak Thai to Mae Hong Son City

A very short, steep descent back to the main loop highway. This is practically a rest day.
- KM 15 - Pha Suea Waterfall: A beautiful midway stop on the downhill ride to snap a few photos.
- KM 30 - Su Tong Pae Bridge: Walk across the atmospheric bamboo bridge stretching over working rice paddies and into the hillside temple.
- KM 45 - Mae Hong Son City: Use this relaxed day to get a two-hour traditional Thai massage and eat an incredible local Shan dinner overlooking Nong Chong Kham lake under the temple lights.

Day 4: Mae Hong Son City to Mae Sariang

Flowing curves heading deeper into the southern forest. The roads here are much wider and more forgiving than the north.
- KM 75 - Khun Yuam: An ideal stop for a midday lunch and a quick refuel for the bike.
- KM 165 - Mae Sariang: Check into your quiet riverside room and absolutely enjoy the tranquility of the loop’s quietest and most untouristed major town. Grab a drink at Sawadee Bar.

Day 5: Mae Sariang to Chiang Mai

Wide sweeping pine-forest curves and a long dual-lane highway back to the hustle of Chiang Mai city life.
- KM 60 - Pine Tree Garden (Suan Son Bor Kaew): A great photo opportunity in the tall rows of pines.
- KM 105 - Ob Luang National Park: An ideal spot to stretch your legs at the river gorge before the final long push.
- KM 190 - Chiang Mai: Navigate heavy Highway 107 traffic and drop the bike off, celebrating the completion of one of the world’s great motorcycle routes.
