Clockwise: 4-Day Route (Standard)
import { Aside, Card, CardGrid, LinkButton } from ‘@astrojs/starlight/components’;
This is the “Sweet Spot” itinerary. It allows for a relaxed pace with enough time for decent lunches, proper viewpoints, and taking it all in without feeling completely exhausted by the time you reach your hotel.
Breaking the loop into 4 days allows you to spend a full night exploring the legendary social scene in Pai.
Day 1: Chiang Mai to Mae Sariang
Section titled “Day 1: Chiang Mai to Mae Sariang”Distance: 190 km | Estimated Ride Time: 4.5 hours | Pace: Fast & Flowing
Highway 108 South provides a highly forgiving introduction to the trip. The first 50 km are relatively straight, letting you get a feel for your rented bike’s brakes and throttle before the curves begin.
- KM 85 - Ob Luang National Park: A great place to stretch your legs and walk the small bridge spanning the rushing river gorge.
- KM 130 - Pine Tree Garden (Suan Son Bor Kaew): An excellent photo opportunity in the towering pines.
- KM 190 - Mae Sariang: Settle in, grab a beer at Sawadee Bar, and watch the sun go down. Mae Sariang is the quietest town on the loop, perfect for resting up.
Stay Strategy: Mae Sariang — Riverhouse Resort or Above The Sea.
Day 2: Mae Sariang to Mae Hong Son City
Section titled “Day 2: Mae Sariang to Mae Hong Son City”Distance: 165 km | Estimated Ride Time: 4 hours | Pace: Moderate Curves
The curves begin to tighten slightly as you progress north into the denser jungle. The traffic here is usually very light, making it a joy to ride.
- KM 90 - Khun Yuam: Fuel stop and lunch. Detour Note: If traveling in November/December, detour slightly east to the Thung Bua Tong (Mexican Sunflower) fields which paint the mountains bright yellow.
- KM 115 - Pha Bong Viewpoint: Pull over, grab an iced Thai coffee, and enjoy the panoramic canyon view.
- KM 165 - Mae Hong Son City: Arrive in time to spend the evening eating highly authentic street food around Nong Chong Kham Lake. Visit Wat Chong Kham, which is beautifully illuminated at night.
Stay Strategy: Mae Hong Son City — Piya Guesthouse or Fern Resort (for a jungle luxury feel just outside town).
Day 3: Mae Hong Son City to Pai
Section titled “Day 3: Mae Hong Son City to Pai”Distance: 110 km | Estimated Ride Time: 3 hours | Pace: Highly Technical
This is the most scenic, dramatic, and elevating section of the loop. Expect constant elevation changes and sharp switchbacks on Highway 1095. Take it slow and use engine braking on the steep descents.
- KM 65 - Jabo Village (Noodle Soup House): The ultimate late-breakfast/coffee stop with your legs literally dangling over a cliff edge.
- KM 75 - Tham Lod Cave: (Optional detour) Add 2 hours to your day to explore this massive, prehistoric river cave on a bamboo raft guided by local villagers.
- KM 110 - Pai: Arrive by early afternoon. Enjoy sunset at Pai Canyon (wear real shoes, not riding boots!), then head to Walking Street for food and live music at Jazz House.
Stay Strategy: Pai — The Reverie (luxury) or Family House Zen Boutique.
Day 4: Pai to Chiang Mai
Section titled “Day 4: Pai to Chiang Mai”Distance: 135 km | Estimated Ride Time: 3.5 hours | Pace: Technical / Heavy Traffic
The infamous “762 curves” section. It’s steep, intensely twisty, and very busy with minivans shuttling backpackers from Chiang Mai. Stay firmly in your lane and use your mirrors frequently to let faster vans pass.
- KM 30 - Memorial Bridge: A good spot to stretch your arms just as you leave the Pai valley.
- KM 90 - 32 Coffee Hill: Excellent halfway pit stop for a final hit of caffeine and a pastry before the mountains plunge back down to the flatlands.
- KM 135 - Chiang Mai: Highway 1095 merges into the fast-paced Highway 107. Be prepared for aggressive, multi-lane city traffic for the last 40 km back to your rental shop.
