Counter-Clockwise: 3-Day Route (Blitz)
import { Aside, Card, CardGrid, LinkButton } from ‘@astrojs/starlight/components’;
A highly fast-paced “lap” of the province. You hit the main stops, but you will be in the saddle for most of the daylight hours. Exploring side trails or taking long leisurely lunches is not an option here.
Not recommended for beginners. You will be exhausted by the time you reach the end of the loop.
Day 1: Chiang Mai to Pai
Section titled “Day 1: Chiang Mai to Pai”Distance: 135 km | Estimated Ride Time: 3.5 hours | Pace: Technical Switchbacks
You bypass the warm-up completely and head immediately out of Chiang Mai via the busy Highway 107 north, turning left onto Highway 1095. This is where the magic (and the challenge) begins. You tackle the most famous and mentally taxing section—the 762 curves from Chiang Mai to Pai—while your concentration levels are at their absolute peak.
- KM 45 - 32 Coffee Hill: Essential stop right as the serious mountain curves begin. Grab a great coffee and pastries to fuel the climb.
- KM 105 - Memorial Bridge: A quick historical photo op just before rolling off the mountain and entering the Pai valley.
- KM 135 - Pai: Drop your bags immediately. If you have energy left, head to Pai Walking Street for street food, or stop by Don’t Cry Bar for the late-night fire show.
Stay Strategy: Pai — Family House Zen Boutique or The Reverie.
Day 2: Pai to Mae Hong Son City
Section titled “Day 2: Pai to Mae Hong Son City”Distance: 110 km | Estimated Ride Time: 3 hours | Pace: Highly Scenic & Steep
This is arguably the most breathtaking and heavily elevated part of the loop. Expect stunning panoramas and rapid elevation changes.
- KM 35 - Tham Lod Cave: This is an incredibly tight schedule for a 3-day loop, but if you wake up before sunrise, you might have time for a quick 1-hour bamboo raft tour inside the cave. Otherwise, skip it.
- KM 45 - Jabo Village Viewpoint: The essential stop. Park at the famous cliff-hanging noodle shop for a bowl of noodles and a coffee with your legs literally dangling into the sweeping abyss below.
- KM 110 - Mae Hong Son City: Arrive in the late afternoon. Catch the golden hour sunset from Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu on the hill above town, then head down to the central lake for the night market.
Stay Strategy: Mae Hong Son City — Piya Guesthouse (best location directly on the lake).
Day 3: Mae Hong Son City to Chiang Mai (via Mae Sariang)
Section titled “Day 3: Mae Hong Son City to Chiang Mai (via Mae Sariang)”Distance: 350 km | Estimated Ride Time: 8-9 hours | Pace: Brutal Endurance
Prepare for a massive day of riding. You must start by 7:30 AM. This will push your physical and mental endurance to its limits, but luckily the roads widen up nicely as you head further south.
- KM 50 - Pha Bong Viewpoint: A quick stop for early morning coffee before the long haul.
- KM 165 - Mae Sariang: Stop for a proper, hearty lunch to regain your strength. We highly recommend Inthira Restaurant for their Muslim-style Yellow Curry.
- KM 270 - Ob Luang National Park: A brief mid-afternoon stretch break by the river gorge before the final push.
- KM 350 - Chiang Mai: Follow Highway 108 back. Traffic gets painfully heavy near the city during afternoon rush hour, so ride extremely defensively as fatigue will be deeply setting in.
